Lough Neagh Tour For European Heritage Open Day 2017

Steeped in history, heritage, folklore, fauna and culture, the shores of Lough Neagh – the largest freshwater lake in the United Kingdom – provide the backdrop for a unique set of day tours. The tours departing from Belfast are aimed at local, national and international visitors to immerse themselves in Lough Neagh and its surrounding natural beauty, to experience local food, local history and local habitat on land and on the spectacular lough itself with Lough Neagh native tour guide, James Walshe.

In celebration of European Heritage Open Day, Lough Neagh Tours are running a free bus tour on Saturday 9th September 2017.  The theme of the tour will be Heritage and Nature: A Landscape of possibilities.  Guests on the tour will experience both the natural and cultural heritage of Lough Neagh, a landscape with an abundance of hidden treasures, stories and traditions spanning back centuries.


  • Depart Belfast 5pm
  • Arrive Cranfield Church & Holy Well 6pm
  • Arrive at the Lockkeepers Cottage, Toomebridge 7pm
  • Meet the local eel fisherman, who will prepare a traditional eel supper (optional – £6pp)
  • Arrive Crosskey’s Inn 9pm (Ireland’s oldest thatched pub) for a traditional music session
  • Depart for return journey to Belfast 11pm



What are European Heritage Open Days?

European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) is a Europe wide event, held annually to promote interest in historic and modern buildings by the public.  A wide variety of buildings and monuments are opened every year, including private houses, churches, scheduled monuments and halls.  EHOD gives everyone with an interest the chance to visit these buildings and historic sites in an enjoyable, safe and organised manner.

Lough Neagh Craic ‘N Food & Drink Tour

A sampling of Lough Neagh Eel accompanied by stories from an eel fisherman whose family have been fishing on the lough since the Flight of the Earls in 1607 starts the tour which ends with toe tapping traditional Irish music in Irelands oldest thatched pub – The Crosskey’s Inn. There is a visit to Ireland’s only buffalo farm at Ballyriff and a stop off at a pub made famous by much loved local poet, the late Seamus Heaney on the Lough Neagh Craic ‘n Food & Drink Tour.  This full day tour includes return transport from Belfast and food & drink sampling throughout the day, tickets are priced at £80pp.

Lough Neagh Wilderness Tour


For those who wonder what rural life was like before technology took over, this one-day tour transports visitors into the wilderness to provide an insight into how the ancestors of Lough Neagh lived and survived!  The ultimate adventurers day out, Lough Neagh Wilderness Tour offers visitors an opportunity to build a shelter, cook their own lunch on the campfire after foraging and a chance to canoe on Lough Neagh with only the resident swans for company.  This full day tour includes return transport from Belfast, as well as locally sourced and foraged lunch, tickets are priced at £70pp.

Lough Neagh Western Forts Tour, Co Tyrone


Taking in the forts and castles on the western shore of the lough, the Western Forts Tour starts at the impressive and imposing Ardboe Cross before a stop at Hill of The O’Neill, Dungannon and on to the spiritual site of Tullyhogue Fort on the outskirts of Cookstown. Mountjoy Castle is the final stop where visitors can imagine the grandeur of the castle on the hill in the early 1600s with its battles and power struggles between the O’Neills and the O’Donnells.  This full day tour includes return transport from Belfast, as well as lunch, tickets are priced at £65pp.
